Safety is everybody’s business!
It won’t hurt to talk about workplace safety—again. We’ll keep saying it, over and over and over:
“Safety is everybody’s business!” To reduce the risk of accidents, everyone, including operations and
maintenance personnel, should beware of potential hazards. Be mindful of:
Safety Apparel:
- Wear insulated work gloves when handling hot bearings or using bearing heaters.
- Wear heavy work gloves when handling sharp-edged parts, especially impellers.
- Wear safety glasses (with side shields) for eye protection.
- Wear steel-toed shoes for foot protection when handling parts, heavy tools, etc.
- Wear other personal protective equipment to safeguard against hazardous/toxic fluids.
Couplings Guards:
- Never operate a pump without a properly installed coupling guard.
Flanged Connections:
- Never force piping to make a connection with a pump.
- Use only fasteners of the proper size and material.
- Ensure there are no missing fasteners.
- Beware of corroded or loose fasteners.
Operation:
- Do not operate below minimum rated flow, or with suction/discharge valves closed.
- Do not open vent or drain valves, or remove plugs while a system is pressurized.
Maintenance Safety:
- Always lockout power.
- Ensure that a pump is isolated from the system and pressure is relieved before disassembling pump, removing plugs or disconnecting the piping.
- Use proper lifting and supporting equipment to prevent serious injury.
- Observe proper decontamination procedures.
- Know and follow company safety regulations.
- Never apply heat to remove an impeller.
- Observe all cautions and warnings highlighted in your pump instruction manual.
SAFETY! It can’t be overstated
